科目目的
This course focuses on output: how students communicate information in English.
This involves extensive practice in script writing and the use of voice, eye contact, gestures, and other body language. Students will also make use of audio-visual and computer resources, including presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint (or similar software). They may also learn how to create poster presentations (optional).
As with the companion course Reading Focus for SDGs, presentations in the course will be on themes relevant to SDGs.
到達目標
This semester you will be giving three presentations on the Causes of Poverty and Solutions to Poverty.
Presentation 1: Poverty Causes
Your first presentation will be by yourself—an individual effort. Please consider an issue that you may be interested in. You can present this issue in a developed or developing country. Please try to cover a little of the background of why there is poverty. What causes can you identify? What countries do you see the causes of this poverty? Can you give enough examples and details? Please consider a Solution to the Poverty Causes you have considered. But please don’t spend much time on solutions just yet. Presentation 2 is about Solutions to either your Environmental or World Poverty Presentations.
Some Topics: Disease, Unfair Trade, Lack of Education, National Debt, IMF/World Bank Structural Adjustments, Global Warming, Overpopulation, Dictatorships/Corrupt Governments, Lack of Democracy, Lack of Access to Loans, Discrimination of Minorities.
Presentation 2: Poverty Solutions
With your group (of at least 3 members), please choose one student’s presentation of Poverty Causes. Together, as you research, organization your presentation to address this poverty issue. You already have the research for some of the causes, but please research the current solutions, using United Nations, International Red Cross and other Non-Profit Organizations, and Government Efforts. Further, please be critical of current policies. For example, if your cause of poverty is the lack of education, please explain why it hasn’t been addressed properly. Remember, please focus on evidence. Also, please propose your own solutions to the challenge.
Presentation 3: Poverty Solutions
With your group, please choose a second student’s presentation on Causes of Poverty and please follow these steps: Choose you or your partner’s social problem from Presentation 1. 1) Conduct more research about the problem in the library, on the internet, or by interviewing experts. (You should already have information to define the problem and explain some main causes.) You must also find information about current policies; 2) Organize your information logically. Explain current policies and propose your own new policies; 3) Create clear, informative audio-visual materials and PowerPoint which will effectively support your explanation; 4) Think of how you will stimulate your audience and make them think by including at least two Audience Involvement activities; 5) Think of the types of questions your audience will ask you and get ready to answer the questions. Practice Questions and Answers strategies.
By the end of the course, all students will have had extensive practice in script writing and giving presentations. They will have learnt how to plan and present scripted oral presentations, including PowerPoint-style slideshows. When giving their presentations, they will be able to effectively use techniques involving voice, eye contact, gestures, and body language.
