授業の概要
This course is an intensive introduction to academic essay writing in English. It is intended for students who intend further university study in English, either in Japan or overseas. It is suitable for both (a) students who have little or no experience of essay writing, or (b) wish to revise and practice their existing essay-writing skills.
Students will learn the essential elements of topic formation, research, paragraph and essay structure, revision, and proofreading. Over the 14 lessons, they will plan, research, and write an essay of approximately 1000 words on a topic of their choice in the fields of policy and cultural studies.
科目目的
The course begins with topic formation and research techniques: how to generate and refine ideas, and how to find and assess information from the Chuo libraries, databases, and online sources. It then introduces the fundamentals of good writing style, followed by the essential structure of both paragraphs and essays. Students will also be taught how to revise and proofread their work to achieve a high-standard finished manuscript.
到達目標
By the end of the course, students will be able to form ideas suitable for academic essays, locate and evaluate academic-level sources of information, and independently produce well-documented essays that conform to English-language academic standards.
