授業の概要

＜学位授与方針と当該授業科目の関連＞
この科目は、問題解決力（外国語とコミュニケーションの能力及びコンピューターを利用した統計・情報処理と分析の能力を用いて、科学技術及び社会の急速な変化に対応しながら、さまざまな問題を解決することができる）の修得に関わる科目です。
＜概要＞
This is a listening and speaking course based on current issues in society. Students will be required to listen to and read authentic material, discuss and debate issues and give mini presentations. Critical thinking tasks are included. Vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar exercises are also part of the course.

科目目的

To help students to get to the point where they are comfortable exchanging opinions with others on relatively difficult topics
To enable them to make clear and logical presentations without relying too much on written notes
To bring their reading and writing skills to intermediate (collegiate) level.

To give students many opportunities to converse and discuss with others
To give them opportunities to make presentations
To give them opportunities to read about important issues and improve their writing skills

授業計画と内容

There are 10 units in the book. One unit will cover about 2 lessons. Units 6-10 will be taught in Semester 2.
Students are to look at the presentations topics at the back of unit and consider as the unit progresses, the topic they want to present for the their mini presentations.

Lesson 1: Welcome back. Discuss holidays. Review of first semester.

Lesson 2: Unit 6. HOUSING FOR THE FUTURE: Vocabulary. Listening - housing solutions. Speaking. Critical thinking, Rank Options. Video.

Lesson 3: Unit 6: Vocabulary. Listening skill - note taking skill - diagrams and flowcharts. Speaking - Asking for opinions. Prepare mini presentations. Finish for homework.

Lesson 4: Unit 6 - Deliver presentations. Unit 7: THE HUMAN BODY. Vocabulary. Listening. Critical Thinking Skill- Question and check what you hear. Speaking -talk about possibilities. Video.

Lesson 5: Unit 7: Vocabulary. Listening. Pronunciation - reduced forms. Speaking - predictions. Review of units. Prepare mini presentation. Finish for homework.

Lesson 6: Unit 7: Present mini presentations. Unit 8: LEARN TO LOVE ART. Vocabulary. Listening - Recognize opinions. Critical thinking - Synthesize. .

Lesson 7: Unit 8. Video. Vocabulary, listening. Speaking- Modals and questions for suggestions. Prepare mini presentations. Finish for homework.

Lesson 8: Unit 8. Deliver presentations. Review of first 3 units. Listening test.

Lesson 9: Unit 9: OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH NATURE. Vocabulary - Collocations. Speaking- Comparing and contrasting. Video.

Lesson 10: Unit 9: Vocabulary. Listening. Speaking. Critical thinking - analyzing arguments. Speaking. Prepare mini presentation. Finish for homework.

Lesson 11: Unit 9: Deliver presentations. Unit 10. HOW WE COMMUNICATE. Vocabulary - phrasal verbs. Listening - solving communication problems. Speaking and grammar exercises. Video.

Lesson 12: Unit 10: Vocabulary. Listening. Critical thinking - recognizing cultural differences. Speaking. Prepare mini presentations.

Lesson 13: Unit 10. Deliver presentations.

Lesson 14: Individual speaking tests. Course review and confirmation of achievement goals.
