授業の概要

This is a course on modern Japanese literature. The works of numerous writers will be discussed, and six novels will be read and discussed in detail.

科目目的

The two general goals of this class are:
1) to give students an introduction to modern Japanese literature
2) to give them the opportunity to read and discuss a number of well-known novels

到達目標

The ultimate objectives of this class are:
1) to provide students with a reasonable amount of information related to well-known Japanese authors and their works
2) to help them to think critically about Japanese novels and their various themes
3) to help them enhance their knowledge of Japanese culture

授業計画と内容

As the schedule below indicates, two weeks will be devoted to the discussion of each book that students will read. The terms "Part One" and "Part Two" simply refer to the parts of a given discussion and not to divisions within books.

Week 6 - A Discussion of Soseki Natsume's "Kokoro" (Part One)
Week 7 - A Discussion of Soseki Natsume's "Kokoro" (Part Two)
Week 8 - A Discussion of Yukio Mishima's "Confessions of a Mask" (Part One)
Week 9 - A Discussion of Yukio Mishima's "Confessions of a Mask" (Part Two)
Week 10 - A Discussion of Kobo Abe's "The Woman in the Dunes" (Part One)
Week 11 - A Discussion of Kobo Abe's "The Woman in the Dunes" (Part Two)

Novels will be read as homework. Students will also write two essays as homework and complete two other short written assignments.
