授業の概要
Exploring Law & Society, Integrating Topics & Skills
Human rights, Gender, Culture and History, Drug use and abuse, Business, Psychology, Medical practices, Governance, Crime and countless other topics offer unique opportunities to explore and better understand the interaction of Law & Society. In this course, the class will choose topics of Law & Society to research and discuss, as individuals and groups, while also developing various English skills, such as debate, critical thinking, and PPT presentations. Most class work will be done in English, but Japanese will also be used.
科目目的
This course is suggested for Law Faculty 2nd-year students with an interest in the role of law in society, and perhaps considering study abroad while at Chuo. Students who take this course will gain a broad view of law and society, and through consideration of specific legal issues they will come to a richer understanding of how law and society are intertwined. In addition, students will gain a clearer understanding of the practical influence of law in our society, and vice versa, as well as recognize how a nation's legal system powerfully influences the daily lives of its citizens.

During this course, you will:
- come to understand various issues of law and society, nationally and internationally;
- learn to better understand how law & society interact and impact each other;
- improve your English research and discussion skills;
- develop the skills needed to make clear and appealing PPT slides;
- develop the ability to make effective and logical presentations in English; and,
- if you choose, gain the skills needed to study abroad while a Law Faculty student.

The course instructor (Hesse ヘッセ):
- is trained and licensed as a lawyer (JD, LL.M) in the US (Massachusetts and DC);
- has taught JD/LLM courses in American law schools;
- was an environmental columnist for 25 years with the Japan Times
- has worked at the United Nations (UNEP) in Narobi, Kenya;
- has worked at the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) in Washington, DC;
and,
- has researched and taught courses in Law & Society for over 30 years.
