授業の概要

This is a STANDARD LEVEL elective for students with a TOEIC score of less than 600. Students will build their English conversation and listening skills by exploring topics that matter to their daily lives and future goals. They will listen to real-world English from news, conversations, and other media, and practice understanding spoken English in everyday situations. This course will put a particular focus on learning self-study skills students can use after completing their university studies. Students will be encouraged to look for opportunities to improve their speaking and listening by technology and resources on the internet. Through their work in class, students will gain confidence in their communication skills and learn how to become lifelong learners of English.
本科目はTOEIC600点未満の学生を対象とする「スタンダード・コース」に位置づけられる。学生は日常生活や将来の目標に関わるトピックを扱いながら、会話力やリスニング力を養成する。ニュースや会話などの現実の英語を聞き取り、日常場面での英語理解を練習する。また、この科目では特に、大学卒業後にも活用できる自律学習スキルの習得に重点を置く。学生はインターネットなどの技術やリソースを用いてスピーキング・リスニング力を高める機会を探すよう奨励される。授業を通して、学生は英語でのコミュニケーション力に自信を持ち、生涯学習者として英語を学び続ける力を身につけることを目指す。

科目目的

In this course, students will continue to develop their communication skills in English. They will also learn self-study skills they can use after graduating from university.
本科目では、学生が英語でのコミュニケーション能力をさらに発展させるとともに、大学卒業後に役立つ自律学習スキルを身につけることを目的とする。

到達目標

Students should be able to:
1. Understand a variety of English media including news reports and conversations.
2. Share information and ideas clearly.
3. Study English independently outside of class.
英語コミュニケーション2を通して、学生は以下のことが可能になることが期待される。
1．ニュースや会話など多様な英語メディアを理解することができる。
2．情報や考えを明確に伝えることができる。
3．授業外で自律的に英語を学ぶことができる。

授業計画と内容

The content of the classes may alter considerably depending on whether we are working online or in face-to-face classes and then the necessary rules and guidelines for permissible activities in face-to-face environments.
Week １: Welcome back - Conversation activities around the students' summer experiences.
Week ２: Q and A - Students construct questionnaires for other students to respond to.
Week 3: Conspiracy theories 1 - A video related set of activities looking at the theme of conspiracy theories.
Week 4: Conspiracy theories 2 - Students research, describe and discuss conspiracy theories.
Week 5: Scary stories - Communication activities based around Halloween themes
Week ６: You are the teacher 1 - Preparing English activities based around a video of the students' choice.
Week ７: You are the teacher 2 - Watching and responding to the activities prepared by other students.
Week ８: Make a game - Students design English games in groups.
Week ９: Play the game - Students play and evaluate games created by other students.
Week 9: Controversial issues - Communication activities related to the theme of controversial issues.
Week 10: Presentations 1 - Choosing a topic, researching and outlining.
Week 11: Presentations 2 - Finalising presentations and related materials.
Week 12: Christmas class - Communication activities based around Christmas themes.
Week 13: Presentations 3 - Performing presentations with discussion questions.
Week 14: Course review and feedback.

Students will be expected to develop their work to the best of their level, outside of class if necessary, and show the quality of their work through class activities.

As with the English Communication Skills 1 course, there is also no textbook for this course. The teacher will provide materials, and students are welcome to search out their own materials on the topics and carry out independent research within them.
